I went to the pickup on an unseasonably warm December evening, during what has been un unseasonably warm December week. There was no one to greet me but the volunteers—a fairly unemotional ending to a months-long event that was maybe more meaningful to me than I have processed yet, but the real party was last week, when the farmer showed up and there was pie.
More salads, more roasting, more etc. That is to say, the blog isn’t over, at least for now. I’ll likely have a recipe or two more to share. And I might, might, turn this into more than just a food share blog. Though with less frequency, perhaps. Less structure that feels stressful and thus becomes a chore. Plus I’ll still be canning and jamming, and checking out the farmers market this winter.
I’m not sure if I’ll continue the CSA next year. I love the variety and surprise, and the diversity of meals I’ve been preparing, but J and I don’t always want to cook, and there is much more produce than I think two people can eat in a week. This season, there was way too much radicchio, not enough basic produce, and the too-late-in-the-year veggies that went bad too quickly (though the farmers made up for it the next week) was a bummer. Also, one of the reasons I chose this CSA was for the fruit share; it’s from a farm I love to visit at the farmers market, but we didn’t get the same variety in the CSA that they sell at the market. But I could skip the fruit and flowers next year. I have a few months to decide, I suppose.
