On knitting

[my craft desk + a sweater I finally seamed together after finishing the pieces a year-and-a-half ago]

There’s no pickup this week, so I’ve been musing about how else I want to be using this blog. And I know I want to share my craft side more. I spend a lot of time with yarn, and am always trying to learn new crafts.

When I worked for a yarn store, people would regularly ask me my favorite thing to knit. I could easily answer: hats. Hats are so easy—just a tube and you’re done. They’re fast to knit (relatively, obvs); I could usually finish one over a couple of evenings or a weekend. And they’re a great way to try out new stitches, or yarns, or colors. And I wouldn’t get stuck in Sleeve Island.

Not that I don’t like knitting sleeves, but at the point in a sweater when all that’s left is the arms, I somehow feel like an entirely new garment still needs to be made. A second sweater, after all the time spent on the first, when it’s really more like a third of a sweater body. Plus, I get overwhelmed by the seaming. Hate it. I have started and not finished so many sweaters because the sleeves need to be attached, or picked up, or etc.

So: lately. I’m trying to finish these almost-done sweaters from years back before allowing myself to move on to something new. I’m getting better with seaming. I’m getting better with completing things. I’m going to start documenting my knitting here. Mostly because I miss sharing things I’m working on, and I’m trying to share more here. But also because it will force me to finish what I’ve started.
